Playing with fire
Some elevated recipes to cook over the campfire to get you ready for summer and warm days ahead
I’ve been doing a re-set the last few weeks. Starting at Mamaw’s working a bit and taking some time to slow down, catch up on some sleep, and sort through thoughts. I was working on some Maker’s Mark bottles for LexArts. I can’t say the tail end of that project was restful or restorative coming off a juice cleanse and acquiring a stomach virus paired with lots of detail oriented hours working on sugar flowers, but i’m happy to say they're done, and maybe it all was a rest of sorts 😅.
I was asked to join on a lake trip and felt like it was a great way to keep the reset vibe going. I am on a mountain in Eastern Kentucky at Mamaw’s in Jenkins. More nature seemed to fit the bill before I start my next sugar flower project. Plus, I’ve always wanted an excuse to cook over the open flame and try out my inner Francis Mallman
Lake Herrington and a very good lunch with wine at Trustee’s Table in Shaker Village. Otherwise, more cooking.
For years now at varying points, i’ve done a complete deep dive into Francis Mallman’s cooking style and recipes. Cooking over fire in five distinct ways, often in Patagonia, I am a sucker for the romance of it all. I've researched how to do it in the garden to no fruition. But for this, I thought i’d finally put it to the test with these simple yet elevated campfire recipes.
I bought one of Francis’s books digitally, the vegetable oriented and newest one, Green Fire, so it would be on my phone, ready to access and keep the packing down. I’m usually hauling books everywhere, but was experimenting with keeping things down to a weekender bag, Mocha’s supplies, and a picnic basket with ingredients.

Here is a rough sort of menu I came up with: maybe you could use it for your camping or over the fire cooking endeavors this summer. I imagine it would be fun to feed your crowd or just the two of you.
